“Three years ago, I came to the U.S. from Japan. I didn’t have my green card yet, my husband was job hunting and stress was building. We lost our ability to pay rent and became homeless. For a month, we stayed in a shelter. We talked, we prayed and surprisingly found a government-subsidized apartment. A few months later I went for an exam. I had known for some time that I had a lump in my breast, but I never told my husband. After all of the past troubles, nothing could compare to us hearing that I had cancer. Not just breast cancer but fourth stage breast cancer. Financial struggles are huge when you have an illness like this, but we were very thankful to have support from foundations like Pink Daisy Project.”
